SharePoint: ToolTip 2.0

Introduction

About a year ago I created a solution that would add tool tips to links.  The solution worked, but required too much configuration and getting into the code of the solution.  Since then I have created a new way to interface with solutions and the variables needed to execute them and so I have begin to transform my solution to use this new interface.

What does this mean to the information worker, no more need to look in code to make changes. Now you can make the changes in the Rich Text Editor by just filling in the form.

ToolTip 2.0 now makes it easier to implement by only needing you to identify the name of the link as you see it on the page. Then add the tool tip in the next filed below.  It is now that simple.

Here is a picture of the result:

Solution

The solution is all contained in the Web Part that can be found here: http://www.bitsofsharepoint.com/ExamplePoint/SimpleTip/default.aspx

The process is now very simple.

Step 1
Download WebPart: ToolTip 2.0 – http://www.bitsofsharepoint.com/ExamplePoint/CodeExamples/SimpleTip_Code.dwp

Step 2
Install on a web page on SharePoint.

Step 3
Configure which links will have a tool tip.  Edit the ToolTip 2.0 Web Part.  Open the Rich Text Editor.  Next identify the links to have a tool tip by links name.  Then add the tool tip in the next box.  Here is an example:

Implementation

All of the details can be found here: http://www.bitsofsharepoint.com/ExamplePoint/SimpleTip/default.aspx

You can now create tool tips for any page on the fly by just adding a web part.

Hope this Helps.

Nice site and I’ve been there a few times. Love the list filter you made.

Enough of the flattery and on with the begging ;)

Don’t suppose you know how to get tooltips on SharePoint content pages do you?

I’ve been trawling for javascript that might allow pop up tooltips in an OOTB wiki or list, library etc. Even posted on Stump the Panel http://www.endusersharepoint.com/STP/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=152

Could a CEWP at the top of the page be used to read the viewable text and action any of the following?
Make particular words bold or colourised? Such as an unusual word or acronym that might benefit from a toptip pop-up.
Could it reference a list or library elsewhere on the site where the glossary of words has been defined?

Oh… and the moon on a stick as well please.
