MarkMiller - Founder and EditorI was able to pull down all the content from the legacy site this weekend, but there’s an issue with importing the legacy database. I’m teaching all day today, so I won’t be able to work on this until tonight.

Good news is, it’s very close to being done. Bad news is, it’s going to have to wait until I can troubleshoot the database insert.

Thanks for hanging in there with me. It’s getting sorted out, just not as fast as I’d like. –Mark

December 4th, 2009

Things are starting to come together with the support of RackSpace and fpWeb.net. I spent the day yesterday, and until 2:00am this morning, getting the new MySQL database setup, installing WordPress, tweeking the new theme and moving media content into my Amazon S3 account. I’m working with Natasha (@TeamEUSP) to start the process of verifying all of the old content and building the new categorization system that will help with filtering and search.

I’ve had tons of offers of help and that is very much appreciated. Natasha and I are plugging away and will let you know if there’s anything that can be done. The planned first iteration rollout will be, Monday, December 7. This will be a fully functioning site as far as content goes, but not all the bells and whistles until I get this thing tested under a load.

It’s amazing how much a simple blog has affected so many people. Thank you for your support and encouragement. This down time has given me a chance to reflect on what my role is in the SharePoint Community. I’ll have much more to say on this over the next few weeks, but right now, I’ve got to get back to work and get the infrastructure built out.

Regards,
Mark

December 3rd, 2009

Note: Michael Gannotti and I just had an extended discussion on the status of EndUserSharePoint.com. I’m planning to have that recording available by noon today, EST.

Yesterday was pretty exciting as far as response from the SharePoint Community. Many companies and individuals stepped up and expressed the desire to help. Here’s the short form of what’s going to happen.

Tom at fpWeb.net and Jeff at Rackspace both stepped in to say “What can we do to help”? What ended up happening is that EndUserSharePoint.com will be utilizing both of the resources, getting the best setup for all involved. We’ll be using a MOSS implementation from fpWeb.net to run a SharePoint Community Calendar Site and run the Power User demos we’ve been building on the site for the Live Online EUSP Workshops. Rackspace will host the EUSP blog and Stump the Panel SharePoint Q&A Forum. I’ll followup with a detailed diagram of the infrastructure of the site as everything settles in.

I’ll be working hard over the next few days to get the content back in order. Expect little trickles and then a firehose as things get cranked back up.

These companys were instant in their response with no other ulterior motive than to help the community and get EUSP back up and running with the least pain as possible. They’ve got my respect and support. I hope you’ll send them a note in the comments section below expressing yours.

Was able to export a copy of the database, so I’ve got all the article content and comments. That gives me a base to start from.

Still working on a hosting solution.

A little more on the situation.

The hosting company has completely blocked access to the content of the site. I had a request in a comment that asked me to email them one of the articles. That’s not going to happen.

I am still investigating hosting solutions, but there is no ETA for having the site content moved onto a new platform.  I’ll keep you updated as the day progresses.

Wow… it’s been a wild ride for the past twelve hours, but that will have to be talked about in a future article. In the meantime, here’s the situation.

The hosting service has shut down access to EndUserSharePoint.com due to heavy traffic. Fair enough. In a way, that’s good news. I’m in the process of moving to a more powerful solution, but it’s not going to happen today… too much setup and moving content for that.

In the meantime, I’ve created another blog instance on EndUserSharePoint.com. That’s what you’re looking at now. It’s just bare bones, but at least there’s a framework to work with. I’m waiting for the rest of the world to wake up and then start looking for a real solution.

Here are a couple of other sites to keep you busy till we get back up to speed.

  • Path to SharePoint (Christophe Humbert)
  • Bits of SharePoint (Peter Allen)
  • SharePoint Use Cases (Toni Frankola)
  • SharePoint Blank (John Anderson)
  • Get the Point (Microsoft End User Team)
  • The live online workshop “SharePoint Charts and Graphs: Part 02 (Sparklines)” will run as scheduled today, Wednesday at 1:00pm EST, since it is on another server.

Thanks for your support and concern. I’ll be updating the situation throughout the day on twitter: @EUSP.  I’ll be back up and running very soon with some new things I’ve been working on the past few months. Now’s as good a time as any to push them out.

    Regards,
    Mark
