Hi,

I am running WSS 3.0 on a Windows 2008 Server 64bit. This runs our intranet which has been going for about 6 months. I have used SharePoint Designer 2007 to make basic edits to pages which work fine.

However SPD2007 has been crashing when I do the following:

I created a links list called 'Tester Links'. I created a new .aspx page in SharePoint Designer 2007, linked it to the default master page then inserted a 'Data View'. I chose 'Tester Links' from Data Source details then clicked Show Data. I selected a couple of fields, went to 'Insert Selected Fields As' and chose 'New Item Form'.

SharePoint Designer 2007 then crashes with the error 'Microsoft SharePoint Designer has stopped working'

I tried creating a new Web Application and site collection, then created a new links list however still the same crashing.

I tried using SPD2007 on both the server that WSS is on and my own client machine. I have also logged in as myself (domain admin) and the domain administrator however I still can't create a new item form!

I also tried this:

1 Open the page with SPD, click Insert > SharePoint Controls > Custom List Form.

2 Select the Link list name at the List or document library to use at form filed and Link at the Content type for use for form filed, check New item form for the Type of form to create section at the List or Document Library Form window > Click OK.

After pressing OK, SPD crashes as before.

Also:

- If I choose Insert > SharePoint Controls > Custom List Form and select either New item form. Edit item form or Display Item form then SPD crashes.

- If I choose Insert > SharePoint Controls > List Form then SDP doesn't freeze.

It seems it is definitely when inserting a custom list form.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Does this only happen on a particular page or is it happening even when using a freshly made aspx page w/o the master page attached?

Also, check your version of SPD. You may want to grab the latest updates if you don't have them already.

Thanks Matt,

Yes, this issue happens even when using a freshly made aspx page without the master page attached.

Also I believe my SPD2007 is up to date. I have SP2 installed and there are no other updates when running Microsoft Update. My version is:
SPD2007 (12.0.6423.1000) SP2 MSO (12.0.6535.5002)

Do you have any other suggestions?

Your SPD is up to date, what patch level is your server at? It's under Central Admin, Operations, Servers in the Farm.

Server is at 12.0.0.6421. Is this the latest?

That's the patch level I'm at. I haven't ran into any issues such as this before. It may be worthwhile to uninstall SPD completely and reinstall it. I'd also sniff out any registry entries that are leftover and delete those too. It all seems a bit too weird.

This is also happening to my work Intranet environment. It was working fine for me, then for some reason, I can't get any Data View to be inserted.

Also, when I convert a web part to XSLT, SP Designer crashes. Tried it on a different machine with different username, does the same thing.

But when I to a different SharePoint server, same client, same version of Designer, it works fine.

Something has been changed or installed on our main SP server for this to occur...?

Hi,

Does anyone have any other ideas on a solve for this issue? I never found out how to sort this and it looks like others are having the same problem.

My WSS 3.0 installation is on a 64bit Server 2008. I believe SPD is only available in 32bit. Could this be the problem?

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

While I haven't had any issues like this before, I can definitely feel your pain.

Are you able to copy a NewForm.aspx and then modify that? You can copy it right into the same path where it is at. I typically rename them from NewForm(1).aspx to CustNewForm.aspx or something like that.
