I have a client with a relatively large SP2010 farm. In one web application there are currently just over 7500 site collections with 10-50 being added each month.
So, I have a need to display a comprehensive list of site collections in a particular web application. I need this to be displayed in a view on a single page of the top-level site in the web application. The form should resemble a link list as it needs to be clickable links to the various site collections.

I've tried to figure out if this information can be gathered through a SOAP web service connection but can't seem to find one that exposes the site collection URL and can be displayed as a multiple entry display.

So, do we have any ideas? suggestions?

Thanks.

Does It have to be fully viewable by all our does it need to be security trimmed? Laura had a blog post about showing sites I have access to by using search. Perhaps that might give you some ideas?

Yes, it needs to be security-trimmed.
I looked for something from Laura on such a thing, but must have missed it. Do you happen to know the URL to that post?

Yep, just looked it up, try this one, Web Part: SItes I have Access to. I've used it in 2007, it can get hairy if you list out subwebs, especially in your case.
