Stump the Panel: SharePoint Q&A

The original list was titled "Wonderful Ideas We Have".

Now they want the list to be titled: "Ideas"

Everything is easy to fix except for one thing ... the URL.
No matter what you do, you still end up with the above URL when the desired change is: http://yada.yada.com/sites/unit/Lists/Ideas/AllItems.aspx

I think it can be fixed ONLY at the server level and cannot be done by a Site Owner with FULL CONTROL or even the Site Collection Administrator (SCA). But I need to be "told" that for sure. Tried to google a solution but found nothing. Ergo I'm coming to the geniuses.

Is this something that can be done by the powers I have (SCA)? And if yes -- HOW!!!

No, only subsites can be URL renamed. You'll have to recreate the list as Ideas. Save the original list as a template with or with out content depending on how much data is there. Create the Ideas list and add back in the content if you couldn't save the list with content. Alerts and workflows may need to be recreated.

You can rename lists and libraries all you want but it doesn't change the underlying URL. If that needs to be changed, it has to be recreated.

Well, fudge! I don't like the answer but I knew that WAS the answer.
My thanks for a quick response. You confirmed what I strongly suspected.

Actually, you can rename the list in SharePoint Designer and it will modify the URL.
Browse to the list in SPD then right-click and rename. The list's URL will be changed to whatever you renamed it to.
You'll have to go back and change the "Display" name through the web interface if needed, but changing the URL is done through SPD.
