2009-11-02 Today in SharePoint – Information Worker Resources

This week’s recording of Today in SharePoint is a group effort in trying to find viable SharePoint Information Worker resources. Catherine Ford from Sutter Health commented on twitter about problems finding Information Worker content in a central location. Michael Gannotti joins the discussion along with SharePoint End User expert Steve Smith from Combined Knowledge.

This session runs about twice as long as our normal 20 minutes sessions, but it is a critical topic in need of exposure. We look forward to your comments and recommendations of other resources.

Update: Joel wasn’t able to attend the session, but has written an outstanding article on other possible resources.

One of the things that we did at our company was to build a SharePoint Users Group site where resources could be located and users could share their solutions. We were in the process of having a show case sections to highlight the great work that people internally were doing. We also started a SharePoint Users Group in the company that would meet monthly and provide an avenue for sharing best practices, asking questions, and meeting others that have solved similar problems.

Kathrin I believe you are in Sacramento, I do not know if you have attended the Sacramento SharePoint User Group. We meet every third Thursday of the month. It would be great to have you join.

Great topic. End-Users are rarely mentioned, except in passing, on the majority of SharePoint blogs and tech sites; and I think we need visibility for the blogs and sites that DO exist that can help them (or help me help them). Thanks for doing this video, and I’ll continue to keep my eye out for resources.

This is a great topic. I have an art background, fell into medical transcription in order to raise a family, which exposed me to the wonderful world of Sharepoint. I’m completely self taught – our Sharepoint architect, after my complaint that 2003 couldn’t do what I imagined, opened 2007 to me before the rest of the organization was upgraded. His only instructions “Go ahead and use it, just don’t ask me any questions” So I went crazy creating resources for our staff – always keeping in mind ‘best practices’. Now it’s my job, supporting the Revenue Cycle in our hospital. I don’t have server access, despite begging… but I read, read, read! I think you need equal parts creativity, tenacity, and courage to just jump in an try it. But I’d love a place to share the experience! Can you tell I also have some cheerleading background? We need that out here to counterbalance the Geek I think! Go End-Users! Hooray Sharepoint!
