EndUserSharePoint.com: Iron Man vs Indiana Jones… Are you kidding me?

IronmanIs there any discussion here? I never thought there would be but it looks like the case of HR vs IT.

Check with your IT department and I don’t think you’ll find any hesitation: Iron Man with no doubt. Then call up someone in HR and casually mention that you are considering going to a movie this weekend and could they help you choose between Iron Man and Indiana Jones.

I need some help here. Let me know your choice. I never would have considered that ANYONE would choose IAJ over Iron Man, but then again, I don’t hang out with HR much. All votes count, but please don’t throw Spiderman into the mix… way too many brain cells will be wasted.

What??? Man, you MUST be under the age of 35! Hey, I’m a HUGE Marvel heroes fan and absolutely LOVED Iron Man, but COME ON! You’ve got to be kidding me! EVERYBODY knows that Indiana Jones is THE MAN! It WILL be the blockbuster of the summer, even though we have a LOT of good movies coming out (IM, Hulk, Dark Knight). Why, you may ask? Because IJ is more REAL. As much as we all like to fantasize (and I admit, Iron Man is as close as superheros come to reality), it’s nice to put yourself in the shoes of someone who could really exist. If you didn’t grow up with Indy, there’s the reason for your confusion. :) Have a good weekend and go see Indy 4 when it hits!

    Indiana Jones… hands down.

He’s the man, I’m a bit scared about this new side kick, but he is the man. Indy could get out of any situation and you can relate to his foibles. Iron man was an great movie, way better than I expected, but he starts out being too over the top and the changes aren’t fully convincing. Other than weapons, what really changed in that cave?

  3. Mark Miller says:

Rodney – Sorry to say, the last time I was carded for alcohol was 35 years again, so you missed it by 20 years.

Joel – I’m coming at it from more of a gadget freak’s perspective. I’ve been into battlebots for decades so Iron Man along with Transformers will be the DVDs I take with me on long road trips. That and the director’s cut of Blade Runner with no voiceover.

All that said, I’m off to see Speed Racer tomorrow with my five year old… got to get them started early, you know.

  4. Suzanne says:

Hey, I’m for Indiana Jones, but then I’m a former HR person who decided to jump ship to a more interesting job in IT, but Indy’s still my man!

  5. With all due respect to the Indy-loving peeps hereabouts, to geekily paraphrase (Ultimate) Nick Fury by way of reply, “Iron Man — that’s not EVEN open for discussion.”

It’s worth noting that I say that having grooved to Raiders upon its release as a kid, having LOVED Temple as a teenager (and still rank it as Indy’s finest hour) … but having been woefully disappoined with the shenanigans in Crusade.

That said, my love of comics predates my love of Indy, so despite the fact that I’ve gone as Indy on Halloween, Iron Man may very well be the finest superhero movie ever and, having seen the extended preview at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer, my anticipation for it FAR outstripped my (measured) expectations for this latest Indy installment.

  6. Dink says:

Personally, I’m not sure what the big deal is…they’re both worthy.

As a kid, I liked to pretend I was Indy…even got a cheap bullwhip and terrorized my brother…although I never could figure out how to have it untie itself from a treebranch in mid-swing to allow me to recover it while landing :)

But I also liked to play the “Super Heroes” games as well…although for some reason I always liked to be AquaMan (helps that I was the only one in the neiborhood with a pool). IronMan was cool, but I cant really say that he was my favorite or really stood out to me, but I did like his attitude.

I’ll see the movie without a doubt, but most likely it’ll be after I see Indiana Jones…after all, he’s MacGyver with a Whip – and who doesn’t like MacGyver?!?!

Dink – Being raised in the south (Mississippi), we all had guns as we were growing up. One of my fondest memories is taking my bb gun and having my kid brother act as a shooting gallery, running along the back fence with me taking potshots.

Move ahead a couple years. When I was in the Army, we were trained with something called “The Law” that could single handedly blow up a tank. Damn thing was nothing more than a cardboard tube that would fire this HUGE round and explode on contact… only good for one round and the tube had to be destroyed so it couldn’t be reused to fire mortar rounds.

That’s my Iron Man subtext and I’m sticking to it.

    Mark

  8. Dink says:

    Mark,
Hmm…it appears that we had similar upbringings (My brother still has a small impression in his neck where I shot him with a BB gun).

‘Course, we took it a step further than your potshot example in which we’d stand about 50 feet from each other and take turns shooting arrows at each other from my dad’s compound bow and try and grab the arrows in flight (remember the “Kung Fu” series with David Carradine?), then try and “whip” apples from each other hands using our “official” Indy bullwhip!!

So, volley back to you with my Indiana Jones subtext :)

John – As a new user of SharePoint, you’ll get a little slack here, but not much. It seems that you and I must defend the empire against the onslaught of IJ fanatics. So it goes…

  10. Dottie says:

IRON MAN without a doubt! I’m 37 years old and I just saw that movie last weekend and it rocked! Never was a big fan of IJ. Oh and Transformers was awesome too! Back to work I go.

  11. Mike Bunyan says:

Don’t waste your time on this american trash.

  12. Mark Miller says:

Mike – Just because you guys handle international films doesn’t mean what is being produced here is trash. Iron Man and Indiana Jones have a specific audience, well into the millions. Mass market doesn’t equal trash, although in the case of all the “reality” shows, you might have a point.

That said, I’m open to discussion.

    Mark

  13. Suzanne says:

I love these IJ and IM discussions…hate reality shows! Unless we can produce one that’s educational? Like users learning sharepoint!

[...] The topic under discussion?  Oh, I’m sorry, did I lead you to believe it was a SharePoint topic?  My bad.  It was a SharePoint blog though, and (to refer back to a question I posed yesterday), one which blogs with end users in mind.  If you’re so inclined (and/or suitably curious), I encourage you to check out the post in question, read my comment, and even join the discussion yourself over at EndUserSharePoint.com.
