EndUserSharePoint.com: Weekly Newsletter – Downloadable Poster of Default Content Types
For the past few weeks, the EndUserSharePoint.com Weekly Newsletter has been taking a look at Site Columns and Content Types.
This week’s installment includes two downloads: an expandable/collapsible map examining inheritance and hierarchy in Content Types, and a large poster of the map completely expanded (1379 x 5043 pixels).
If you would like a copy of the map and the poster, subscribe to the Weekly Newsletter and it will be included as part of your confirmation process. The following is an excerpt from the content of this week’s article:
Drilling Down
Each child can become a parent in its own right, carrying children as a part of its structure. Expand the Document Content Type to see that it has twelve (12) direct children and numerous ‘grandchildren’.
Expanding any one of the child Content Types will show all of the columns in that Content Type. If a Content Type is a parent to more Content Types, the base columns are shown along with the new columns for each Content Type, as shown below with the Document Content Type. When a column is derived from a parent Content Type, it is shown in light gray. New columns are shown in bold, green.

There is a handy feature that can be found here http://www.codeplex.com/features/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=2502
Once deployed this allows you to see the content type hierarchy for any site. This includes custom content types as well as the default types.
I would like a copy of the poster. I’ve subscribed but the link takes me back here.
What am I doing wrong?
Gary – I fixed the link on the subscriber download page. I is working correctly now. Thanks for the heads-up. — Mark
How can I go about downloading the map files?
Jennifer – Look at your most recent Weekly Newsletter. In the top, right corner is a link to the Subscriber Only Archive. Click that link and use the password listed.
The downloads are part of the archive. — Mark
Hi Mark,
I’m trying to find your Tips and Traps for Content types article. I can get to your previous installmants page, but the following links both go to the same article which appears to be the Content Types Intro article:
14.SharePoint 101: Tricks and Traps with Site Columns and Content Types
23.Site Columns and Content Types: Part 1
Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Josh
Hi Josh,
Nope, you’re not missing anything. Sometimes content is resused for different purposes. In this case, number 14 and 23 content was the same, so instead of rehashing the material, I just pointed directly to it.
